Mercedes Oxygen Sensor - Mercedes Tune Up Tech Tip

Getting ready to do a Mercedes Tune Up?

If your vehicle is is surging, hesitating and your fuel economy has declined? Did you fail an emmissions test? Is your check engine light on?
Now is the time to reevalaute the condition of your Mercedes oxygen sensor.

A Quick Rule Of Thumb.

  • Replace unheated oxygen sensors on 1976 to early 1990s Mercedes every 30,000 - 50,000 miles.
  • Heated first generation oxygen sensors on mid-1980s to mid-1990s vehicles replace every 60,000 miles.
  • Heated second generation oxygen sensors on mid-1990s and newer vehicles replace every 100,000 miles.

    Did You Know?
Since your Mercedes oxygen sensor reports to your car's computer whether or not your vehicle is operating at the correct air/fuel ratio the sensor has a dramtic impact on your vehicles performance. Try to consider the oxygen sensor as the judge. Although your vehicles computer receives data from many engine sensors, the oxgen sensor reports to the computer whether the combustion process was effecient. If you oxygen sensor is out of specs it can cause your vehicles computer to inject the wrong amount of fuel in the engine. An engine that runs lean may cause the driver to experience a surgeor hesitiation. A rich running engine may cause a rotten egg smell and a decrease in fuel economy to name a few.

If you change your oxygen sensor at recommended intervals you may improve your fuel economy as much as 10%-15%. With an improvment like that the average driver can save $100 each year in fuel costs.
An oxygen sensor in good operating condition will also minimize exhaust emissions and will reduce the risk of damage to your costly Mercedes catalytic converter.

A Mercedes Oxygen Sensor Is A Repleacement Item.
For these reasons, the Mercedes oxygen sensor should be considered a "tune up" replacement item just like spark plugs, air filters and fuel filters espcially on older vehicles (those built before the mid-1990s).

How to Replace a Mercedes Oxygen Sensor.
The oxygen sensors on most Mercedes are not hard to change. Although tool manufactures make special sockets for removal, most sensors may be removed using a wrench. This requires that you unplug the wire first. On most V8’s the wire is connected by the transmission while many 4cyl. and 6 cyl. vehicles the wire disconnect is under the passenger floor mat.
