Mercedes Radiator Overheating - Tech Tip

My temperature gauge creeps up and my car starts to overheat the longer I drive. What can this be?

A Mercedes radiator that has become partially clogged will usually cause this since the cooling capacity has been reduced as a result of the restriction in the passageways of the radiator core. Since the radiator cannot cool the engine sufficiently, the engine gradually heats up to the point of overheating. There is no fix for this and the Mercedes radiator needs to be replaced. How does this happen, and what can you to correct this? Read on to find out.

Mercedes engines and Mercedes cooling systems use a lot of aluminum in their construction. The manufacturer recommends the use of genuine Mercedes coolant, and there is a good reason for this. Mercedes coolant is a low abrasive, low phosphate type. Abrasives and phosphates can erode away the aluminum causing all kinds of stuff to float around in the coolant. These sediments can cause the passages inside the radiator to clog up, impeding coolant flow. Less flow equals less cooling ability resulting in overheating.

Change you coolant at manufactures recommended intervals using genuine Mercedes coolant to minimize any coolant related problems. If your Mercedes radiator has plastic tanks and is more than 7 years old and has seen 75,000 miles, replace it before it fails. Why risk it.
