Mercedes Steering Rack - Mercedes Benz Steering Rack Tech Tips

Mercedes Steering Rack …

Most Mercedes Benz steering rack systems are fundamentally the same. There are three major parts of your Mercedes steering rack that can go bad. First is the Mercedes power steering pump. One main reason a Mercedes power steering pump could go bad would be a result of the system build up of too much pressure, which reverses fluid back into the pump. This can be caused from turning the steering wheel all the way to its maximum point frequently. High pressure may cause seals to leak including the high-pressure Mercedes power steering hose as well. This would result in a loss of Mercedes power steering fluid. The Mercedes power steering fluid acts as a lubricant for the Mercedes power steering pump so when this fluid gets too low you may start to hear a grinding sound. Soon all steering power would be lost. Second is the Mercedes power steering hose. This hose extends from the Mercedes power steering pump to the Mercedes steering rack.

Usually over time and with the constant high pressure, this pressure hose can leak, resulting in quite a mess of power steering fluid. Lastly, the Mercedes steering rack can fail. Natural road vibration and abuse can beat up the seals and gears of the steering rack which can lead to loose steering or possible a loss of power steering fluid. Tech Tip: Depending on your model, if you have a Mercedes power steering filter then you should change this filter whenever you replace any part or fluid in the system and check your Mercedes power steering filter and fluid level on a regular basis.
