Mercedes Glow Plug - Mercedes Benz Glow Plug Tech Tips

My Mercedes Mirror Broke Off…

Unlike gasoline engines that use spark plugs to ignite the air and fuel mixture in order for starting and combustion, diesel engines use glow plugs to heat the highly compressed air to ignite the fuel that initiates combustion. Glow plug failure is most commonly caused from over voltage. Glow plugs are designed to operate between 1500 to 2000 degrees. When the electrical current to the plug is held too long it can lead to overheating which will cause the glow plug to swell, split or burst and cause immediate failure.

During start up your Mercedes glow plugs are controlled by a preglow time relay, which can often be attributed to causing over voltage. It's not always required to change your Mercedes preglow time relay, but depending on your reason for replacing your glow plugs you may want to seriously consider it. Otherwise it is suggested to replace your Mercedes glow plugs every two years as preventative maintance.
