| My
Mercedes power antenna only retracts half way. What
is the problem? |
|
|
| This
is a common problem with many Mercedes antenna
and can be a rather easy fix. First check inside
your car to if your "half-mast" antenna
switch is in the middle position. If it is,
put it on the full up position, and then check
your antenna operation: (On the days when am
radio was more common, in certain instances,
positioning your antenna mast at the half way
position, would improved reception). If your
antenna still sits at half-mast, or doesn't
extend or retract fully (when you turn the radio
on or off) then most likely you need to replace
the antenna mast portion of the assembly only.

| I
can hear the antenna motor running, but the
antenna mast does nothing. Can I fix this myself? |
| Again
all you need to replace here is the antenna
mast. In most cases that's all it is. This is
something you can do yourself. You will need
another person to help you on this one. There
will be a screw-type collar right on top of
the fender where the antenna sits. Take a correct
size wrench and unscrew this counter clockwise
(care must be taken here as not to scratch the
paint). While some one sits inside the car and
turns the radio on, have your helper pull up
with slight force on the antenna mast. The mast
and nylon tail, (this is the bottom portion
of the antenna mast that engages inside the
assembly, and makes the metal portion of the
mast move) will come out as a complete piece.
Now to install new antenna mast, you basically
perform the same operations in reverse order.
Sit inside car and turn radio off. Have you
helper at the same time, feed the nylon tail
into the assembly while turning the tail back
and forth. This is to enable the nylon teeth
to engage into the gear underneath. When the
antenna tail engages and the motor completes
its cycle and shuts off, screw down the mast
collar, (clockwise direction). After this is
done, turn the radio off and on a few times,
(allowing the antenna motor to completely cycle
each time). This will properly time the antenna
mast to the motor. |

| When
I turn my radio on, the antenna doesn't go up,
and I don't hear any noise coming from it. What's
wrong? |
| In
most cases, it's the antenna motor assembly
that is bad. If your radio lights up and seems
to work, then replace your antenna motor assembly.
Good thing here is that the new motor already
comes with the antenna mast installed. Just
remove and replace with the new unit and your
radio. |
