| I
need to change my Mercedes Benz hood insulation
pad. How do I do it? |
| |
| All
Mercedes Benz vehicles, with the exception
of a few of the oldies, came with hood insulation
pads. Over time they deteriorate and end up
flaking off or just crumble when you touch
them. Also oil may have leaked out of the
front crankshaft seal and slung up hitting
the underside of the hood. The oil will turn
the hood insulation into "mush".
|
| |
| The
hood pad, installed on your Mercedes Benz,
really makes a big difference since the hood
pad keeps engine noise to a minimum. On some
Mercedes Benz models, the hood pads have foil
insulation to help protect the hood paint.

| This
is an easy fix you can perform yourself. |
|
|
| 1.
Find an old discarded blanket you no
longer use. Open your hood to the first
indentation and lay the blanket completely
over a cold engine compartment. Put
on safety glasses to protect your eyes.
|
| |
| 2.
Use a wide scraper or putty knife to
remove the old hood pad. The little
remnants of glue remaining are not a
problem but make sure the surface is
oil free. After you are done removing
the old hood pad, simply fold up the
blanket and remove . No nasty mess in
the engine compartment! |
| |
| 3.
Purchase a can of 3M brand trim adhesive.
We recommend the 3M brand since we found
that this is the only brand that will
hold up to the engine heat. Lay the
new hood pad flat over the engine. Make
sure that the side of the pad that is
going to mate to the hood surface is
facing up. Spray adhesive on both the
pad and the hood and let dry for a few
minutes. Be careful of the over spray. |
| |
| 4.
Although this step doesn't require two
people, it will be much easier with
help. Line up the hood pad with the
hood before you start applying since
the adhesive, on both surfaces, will
bond instantly. Start applying
the new hood pad to the hood, starting
from the front of the hood and slowly
working your way back. Smooth out the
hood pad with your hand as you go. If
you find that you have a little hood
pad left over once you get to the back
of the hood, just tuck it in. |

Stand back and admire. |
