| The
pulsation you feel in the pedal is from the
anti lock brake system detecting a wheel lock
up condition and pulsating the fluid to the
front calipers to correct the lock up condition.
If this pulsation is occurring on gentle braking,
when the wheels are not in fact locked up, the
culprit is usually the front ABS sensors. |
|
| |
| Here
are a few maintenance steps you can perform
that will help keep your Mercedes Benz ABS brake
system trouble free and may fix your pulsation
problem |
| |
| 1.Make
sure you change your brake fluid at recommended
intervals. See your service
or repair manual for the correct mileage
and time limits for your vehicle. This
is especially true for Mercedes Benz models
equipped with ABS brake systems. Brake fluid
absorbs moisture over time which can damage
your ABS system since the moisture can cause
pitting and corrosion of your anti lock brake
system components. |
  |
| |
| Not
only will clean brake fluid save you money in
the long- run, but it will keep your braking
performance of your brakes in tiptop shape since
the moisture which was absorbed in the brake
fluid will boil resulting in brake pedal fade
and decreased braking performance. |
| |
| 2.
Clean your front Mercedes ABS brake sensors
when you have your wheels off and are replacing
your brakes and rotors. The sensors are magnetic
pickups and that attract all of the metal particles
that wear off your brake pads and rotors. Over
time the accumulation of metal on the tip of
the sensor will cause the sensor not to work
properly. You may clean off your sensors
by spraying brake parts cleaner on them. Sometimes
it is necessary to remove the allen bolt and
remove the ABS wheel sensor so you can wipe
off the accumulation of metal fuzz with a soft
clean rag. |
| |
| 3.
Check the wiring from the front ABS sensors
to where it connects to the harness underneath
the hood. Your tires may have kicked up a pieces
of road debris and damaged the wiring. If the
wiring is damaged in any way you will have to
replace the sensor. |
| |
| Tech
Tip...If the pedal pulsating problem still persists
after cleaning the front ABS sensors it is time
to replace them. Replacement is simple. Disconnect
the wiring and remove the retaining allen bolt
or bolts that hold in the sensor. Pull out the
sensor and install the new sensor. Repeat the
procedure for the other side. Check the service
manual for any procedures that will apply
to your car. |
